A few years ago, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan mentioned what she listens to as she does her writing: movie soundtracks. She likes to think about the world’s issues while listening to musical depictions of heroism and overcoming the odds, perhaps because it lifts her thoughts to inspiring perspectives despite the challenges of the day. As Noonan put it, “Movie music is the river on which the story sails—and all writers, in whatever field or discipline, are telling a story.”

I gave it a try and I love it. No matter what kind of work you’re doing, it never hurts to add a victorious or heart-warming tune to set the scene—it just may inspire you to push yourself one step further to do a heroic job.
