Mulligan’s a Mom! Victoria’s Secret Photoshop Fail, and Other Notes from the Week
We’re pleased to bring you “While You Were Out,” the Verily editors’ quick takes on the happenings of this week.
Carey Mulligan Continues to Impress
Carey Mulligan had a baby! The actress gave birth to her first child with husband Marcus Mumford last Wednesday and attended an event promoting her film Suffragette a week later. WOW. If that weren’t enough to amaze you, read Sophie Caldecott’s excellent piece this week on Mulligan’s latest interview for Elle UK magazine—because few things are more refreshing than seeing women such as Mulligan in all their strength and vulnerability. —Mary Rose Somarriba
Misty Copeland Shines on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Bravo to Stephen Colbert for showcasing an impressive if unorthodox duo of musical guests for his Late Show this past week. Acclaimed ballet dancer Misty Copeland joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma for a beautiful performance of Bach music. Copeland already blows our minds, so, needless to say, this made our week. —MRS
Reese Witherspoon Has Gained $10 Million for Her Company

Amber Rose Hosted a Slut Walk in Los Angeles
Model Amber Rose hosted a slut walk in L.A. this week to bring awareness to those who put blame on victims of sexual assault—causing Baleigh Scott at Verily to comment, “I Wish Slut Walks Didn’t Have to Further Sexualize Women to Make Their Point.” Read the full insightful article here. —MRS
Baby Love on DWTS
This week on Dancing with the Stars, in addition to airing several tear-jerking stories and dances about contestants’ most memorable years of their lives, pro dancer Allison Holker announced on air that she’s pregnant. Cue the cheers. Holker, who told her secret to ABC execs in the early days of this season, insists that there’s no problem with her dancing while pregnant. “I’ve already had a child, and I danced almost the entire way through my pregnancy. . . . If I were to stop dancing, that’s when you’re going to have a problem [because I would] get grumpy, emotional, and tired. I need dance. It’s so much a part of me that it makes me a better person every day. I haven’t even been sick one day. . . . I feel energized.” Now, when she and her contestant partner Carlos PenaVega dance on the floor, they’ll be a “trio.” Aw, shucks. Gets me every time. —MRS
Demi Lovato Drops Trou
This week Demi Lovato revealed why she posed makeup-free, photoshop-free, and clothes-free on her latest Vanity Fair cover. To which Monica Weigel at Verily responded: When did authenticity become synonymous with being naked in a magazine? Read more here. —MRS
Victoria’s Secret Fail Number . . . I’m Losing Count
Victoria’s Secret already lost lots of our respect for its ridiculous “perfect body” campaign a while back. But even still it continues to reach new lows with outrageous photoshopping of already ridiculously thin bodies. If a model couldn’t have this body, one might ask, how could anyone shopping at home? They were already showing too much skin, if you ask us, and now there’s even less real human. Not exactly what I’m looking for in my lingerie company. —MRS
In Better News . . . ModCloth Ditches "Plus-Size" Section
Everyone’s favorite retro-chic clothing provider ModCloth said goodbye to “plus-size” language on its site this week. That is, it decided that those shopping for larger-size clothing should be treated like any other customer and search among the range of styles available on the site. Why is this a big deal? Read more in our article this week by Hannah Allen White. —MRS
Jim Carrey’s Girlfriend Was Married to Someone Else
This week it was announced that Jim Carrey’s girlfriend, Cathriona White, who took her life last week, was actually married to someone else at the time of her death. Carrey is doing everything to be helpful to her family at this tragic time. But how is it cool that he’s getting all the attention when he wasn’t even the one attached to her? Women having affairs get called mistresses or the “other woman” . . . and he’s just a kindly boyfriend? To be fair, this is a trivial note in the wake of the far greater tragedy. What this primarily tells us is that White was going through a challenging time in her life. All prayers and thoughts are with White and her grieving family. —MRS
Good News of the Week
An Australian toddler made headlines this week after he was gravely injured in a car accident with his mother and 9-year-old sister last month. When a group of joyriding teenagers slammed into their car, the mother pulled her children from the wreckage as she waited for help to arrive. Her daughter would be treated for internal bleeding and broken vertebrae, but her 16-month-old son was in much worse condition. The toddler had suffered from an internal decapitation, which means that the two vertebrae that attach his head to his neck were broken, but miraculously his spinal cord was intact. After being in a medically induced coma for three days, a surgeon was able to reattach the child’s head to his body using wire and part of his rib. Although he will be in a halo for the next several weeks, the toddler is already up and about and expected to make a full recovery. Talk about the marvels of modern medicine! —Hannah Allen White
