Applying makeup is rough in the summertime. You feel like you and your cosmetics are melting in the hot and humid weather, but you don’t want to look like a hot mess. Plus, no one wants to waste time with an intense beauty routine filled with unnecessary products. After all, it’s summer! You want to enjoy the outdoors.
The trick: It’s all about paring down to simple products that simply work. Below, Verily editors share their personal beauty secrets for beating the heat. We give you full permission to go ahead and steal them.

01 // I always love Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer to deliver just the right amount of color to smooth out my skin, but the real win is the SPF 20—for my average commute, I don’t have to worry about piling on sticky sunscreens. Then, I add just a little bit of Benefit Cosmetics Erase Paste under my eyes, and my skin is good to go.
02 // Because my eye makeup migrates even in chillier temps, I skip eye shadow and liner in the summer and just go for a defining mascara in the waterproof formula (currently CoverGirl LashBlast Waterproof Mascara).
03 // To add a bit of color, I go for matte lips in bright, sunny hues—Isabel & Ruben Toledo for MAC Lipstick in Barbecue and Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Grapevine are always in my purse lately (although they rarely need a touch-up). If you find lipstick too drying, I really like MAC’s lipstick primer underneath, as it adds a bit of moisture without making my lips slick and helps keep the color in place.

01 // I always apply an oil-free sunscreen such as Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen, which has an SPF of 55, before I put on anything else. I think the “base” of a fresh face is flawless skin, so I apply a thin layer of Revlon ColorStay Makeup for Combination/Oily Skin using a BeautyBlender sponge. This foundation is light, but it stays put and helps control shine, even when I’m sweating.
02 // I contour my cheeks with Caudalie Mineral Bronzing Powder for the healthy glow and matte finish.
03 // A swipe of Chanel Rouge Coco on the lips is lightweight, and its hydra tendre formula softens and conditions skin—it’s a perfect-for-summer lip moisturizer and lipstick in one.

01 // My summer beauty regime is all about rocking the low-maintenance beachy look. S Factor Silk Smooth Moisture Serum is my go-to hair gel for smoothing out the frizz, and Kérastase K salt spray is my finishing touch before I head out the door in the morning—a quick spritz on the ends adds shine, spring, and hold that lasts throughout the day.
02 // I usually have a pretty minimalistic approach to makeup all year long, but I never head out without mascara. I love Almay One Coat Get Up & Grow Mascara for the summer. While it is not as “beach-proof” as the label might suggest, I dig it for its light and natural, lengthening, perspiration-proof look.
03 // I’m not a fan of reapplying lipstick, so I swipe on Revlon Color Stay Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Romantic once in the morning and once just before I go out for the night.

01 // I have troublesome dry/combination skin, even in the summer months. So, I start with Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser and Ultracalming Mist, which help soothe my aggravated skin before I put on anything else.
02 // Next, my new favorite discovery is bareMinerals bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation, a tone-correcting mineral foundation that helps heal my skin while truly providing coverage. Plus, it includes broad spectrum SPF 20. The bareSkin Perfecting Face Brush is worth the investment, as it buffs in the foundation for a smooth, even texture on your skin. A little touch of Aveda Petal Essence Face Accents blush, and I’m ready for eyes . . .
03 // I like to play up my eyes year-round, and Make Up For Ever Graphic Liner is a liquid liner pen that’s super easy to use for a fun cat eye (which I learned how to do from this great tutorial!). I finish off the look with Maybelline Full & Soft Thick & Healthy Waterproof Mascara that can handle a dip in the pool.
