Technically, any dress from more than a decade ago could be dubbed "retro." But to be honest, when we hear the word we think of the iconic 1950s fit-and-flare silhouette and envision the costume closet from the set of Mad Men. The fitted waist and A-line shape survived the second half of the century and is still a classic, universally flattering frock for every body type.
With an appreciative nod to the past, we've gathered our favorite affordable fit-and-flare dresses for the office, happy hour, or date night.

One of the biggest fall trends is dark floral patterns, and the easiest way to pull them off is with a simple dress. Dark florals can go from day to night with the simple swap of a cardigan for a leather jacket or blazer and then a great pair of booties or heels. Our favorite styles are from Dorothy Perkins and ModCloth.
BLACK AND WHITE//
Monochromatic black and white balances what can sometimes be an overly sweet fit-and-flare silhouette and bell-shaped skirt. Dots, florals, and herringbone all look modern and sleek when in black and white. Keep your accessories minimal: a great pair of point-toed pumps will do wonders.
Plaid is here to stay for autumn and winter. It can be feminine, as well as urban and cool, without looking too rustic. Boden has a bright and gorgeous take on plaid with their painted plaid patterns in turquoise and pink. And ModCloth is the go-to for more traditional buffalo or tartine patterns. For a more punk look, throw on a pair of booties and black tights.
When you can't think of what to wear, there's nothing easier than throwing on a darling dress in a solid hue. Warm emeralds, teals, pinks, reds, and maroons will bring a little brightness to the cold and gray months ahead. These frocks are easy to accessorize with tights and riding boots.
LITTLE BLACK DRESS//
From work events to cocktail parties, the LBD is your wardrobe mainstay, and you'll always look crisp and put-together in the traditional fit-and-flare shape. Banana Republic is our go-to when it comes to classic staples.
