For this year's Golden Globe Awards, I expected the red carpet to be spotted with the usual stars in dresses that leave me wondering why they bothered wearing clothes at all. What I didn't expect were the number of high-necked, long and short sleeved gowns that absolutely blew my mind, and I would argue, all those who attended.
What brought this happy turn towards elegant, refined silhouettes? When I expressed my shock on Twitter, a friend aptly replied, "Kate Middleton: You're welcome." I imagine the Duchess of Cambridge would be a bit more humble, but it is true that her choice of clothing has resurrected the idea that classy can be cool—although, I think we all know it was never really 'uncool' to begin with.
Here are some of my favorite looks of the night, all from women who not only demanded genuine awe and respect for their beauty, talent and accomplishments, but for their sartorial choices as well.
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey Season 2 in Alexandre Vauthier Couture.
Morena Baccarin, Homeland in Valentino Couture.
Naomi Watts, in Zac Posen.
Kristen Bell, in Jenny Packman, takes the cake for looking stunning while expecting. I'd wear this dress in a heartbeat, pregnant or not.
Adele, for Skyfall, in custom made Burberry
Nicole Richie in Naeem Khan.
Julianne Moore, Game Change, in custom made Tom Ford.
Emily Deschanel in Badgley Mischka.
Maria Menounos in Celia Kritharioti.
