Last Minute Halloween Costumes

If you're anything like the Verily editors, you've waited until the last minute to find a Halloween costume. Although this weekend's parties have come and gone, there's still the official holiday coming up on Wednesday, in which case you may just need another outfit for get togethers at the office or taking the kids trick or treating.

This is the perfect opportunity to get creative with your closet; even better, call good girlfriends over to mix and match clothes and have a good laugh. With little time and even less desire to spend money on a store-bought ensemble, Verily Editor in Chief Kara Eschbach, contributing writer Monica Gabriel, and I stormed our closets to dig up homemade costume ideas in a pinch!

1. Kara as Katniss Everdeen, from The Hunger Games: Army green pants, leather jacket, riding boots, a side braid. The one prop you may have to find is a toy bow and arrow—I happened to have this one lying around as a gift for one of my nephews—which you can find at many dollar stores or big box retailers.

2. Myself as a super cool Book Nerd: Glasses with tape, button down shirt, goofy knee socks, stack of books, pigtails. Really this can be as funny as you want!

3. Monica as Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany's: Little black dress, oversized sunglasses, diamonds and pearls—pile them on! How did we make her long cigarette holder? Find a thin paintbrush or chopstick, wrap white tape around the end, and voilá, you're good to go.

4. 1950s Housewife: A-line skirt, cardigan, pearls, apron, headband, oven mitts. Bonus points if you bring a cookie sheet (times 200 if you actually bring cookies)!

These are just a few of the limitless possibilities you can find in your own closets. What have been some of your favorite from-the-closet costumes?
