Fall Tips from Spring's Fashion Week

Am I alone in feeling disoriented by the 'Spring' aspect of this current New York Fashion Week? Don’t we, the diligently-perspiring citizens of summer, deserve a celebratory respite for having at least survived these scorching summer months?  For all of the excitement Spring 2013 Fashion Week has afforded, it also robs Autumn enthusiasts from  feeling the thrill of these coming cooler months. To mitigate these confusing circumstances, the following are three of Fashion Week's Spring 2013 trends which can be immediately implemented into our current Fall 2012 wardrobes.

1) Turbans

Along with being a lovely accompaniment to Marc Jacobs' Spring collection, these wrapped turbans are also God's gift to both the bad hair day and cold ears. It is high time we started utilizing them! However, don't fall prey to purchasing the over-priced, mainstream silk scarves out there; check your local consignment shops―vintage scarves are often available at 1/4th of the average price if you are patient enough to hunt them down!

2) Braids, braids, and more braids

As beautiful as the clothing was this week, it was often the hair styles walking the runway, particularly the emphasis on intricate, Renaissance-esque braids, that left me feeling especially inspired. These hair stylings are gorgeous, right? So why save these looks for warmer months―bring the braids out now! It is easy to forget that our most beautiful, creative attributes don't cost us a dime.

3) Nude colors

A common misconception about fashion is that its primary duty is to be transgressive: to always push the envelope; to shock; to bring us designs that have never been seen before. But more often than not, it's the pieces which do exactly the opposite that win a place in our hearts. This fashion week, I was won over again and again by the simple, quietly familiar clothing on the runway―clothing that mimicked the natural colors of the body, with fabric ranging from nude tones to ivory tints and rosy hues.
