Down Under Style: Spring/Summer 2013

Australians are recognized for their laid-back, care-free congeniality, and knowing how to have a good time. The fashion scene is no exception, and we were stoked to grab a front-row seat in Sydney's historic Town Hall on August 22nd and 23rd for the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Sydney, which brought together Australia's top designers showcasing their inspirational wear for Spring 2013.

Sydney Sider's sense of fun with fashion is infectious. You'd expect a rushing about and strained chaos before the start of a show (then again, we weren't backstage!), but the relaxed energy of the event and it's crowd made you take a deep breath and smile. Next season promises to be easy breezy, clothes and all. Here's a roundup of our favorite Australian trends and designers we hope to see stateside soon!

BOLD & BRIGHT

Carl-Kapp-Ginger-and-Smart

Bold hues and neon aren't going anywhere soon according to Ginger and Smart's fluoro punches of peachy orange and lime green. Hot pink and deep teal from Carl Kapp's line highlighted his attention to detail and perfect combination of soft and structured evening wear.

MIX & MATCH PRINTS

Roopa Pemmaraju's socially conscious Ready-to-Wear S/S 2013 line.

Tropical, tribal and mirrored patterns took center stage in many of the shows.  Roopa Pemmaraju's showcased original Australian Indigenous artwork on ethically handwoven Indian fabric. Suboo's light-hearted resort wear is the perfect print-on-print ensemble to throw on after a full day in the sun. Bec & Bridge showcased a sophisticated, geometric take on the ethnic print trend.

EASY SILHOUETTES

Akira

We were enchanted by Akira's show-stopping Spring Trends finale which unveiled an array of Eastern influenced kimono silhouettes rich in prints and romantic draping. Alice McCall's bright and effortless silk pieces exuded easy-going summer. And in the line of feminine frocks, Magdalene Velevska's luxe beaded, high-low gown was personally one of my favorite looks of the week.
