The London Look: Fashion Week in the U.K.

Hello from London! I’m Samantha Sault, a Washington, D.C. based writer who covers the intersection of fashion and politics. I’ve reported from New York, London, Hong Kong, and of course, Washington, but I always want to make my way back to sophisticated London—and now I’m here for Fashion Week!

I first came to London Fashion Week two years ago,  where I found that patternmaking is as equally important as Parliament to London’s economy and lifestyle. As Fashion Week takes over the whole city with runway shows, store openings, and exhibits, both government and industry come together to support the event. In fact, Samantha Cameron, Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife, not only sits front row at London’s top shows, but she also serves as an ambassador to the British Fashion Council where she promotes the growth of the industry as critical to the growth of Britain’s economy.

Favorite London Fashion Week moments: covering Burberry Fall ’11 (left) where I spotted Samantha Cameron with Topshop’s Sir Philip Green (bottom right). And hanging out backstage at Vivienne Westwood Fall ’11. I can’t wait to see what’s in store this week!

London has always been a breeding ground for up-and-coming designers and avant-garde trends—not to mention impeccably tailored menswear—but recently, major global brands with British roots have been returning to London to showcase their womenswear, as well. This season, Preen is returning to London after six years in New York, while rag & bone will host a presentation at the brand’s new London store.

Why take note of London’s style scene? Given their focus on tailoring and fit, it is both fashion forward and truly flattering to a woman’s body. Just ask Duchess Catherine—her wardrobe is a “who’s who” of Britain’s best designers including London’s own Issa London and Roksanda Ilincic, and she’s always dressed flawlessly.

I’ve got my cape, camera and Airborne—London weather goes right to my bones!—and I’m excited to bring the “London Look” and my Fashion Week adventures to you.
